Cyril and Souris

Many years ago,
when my grandfather, Cyril Pope was just a teenager,
he traveled to Souris, PEI
to fish.
(It's pronounced Surrey.)

It felt surreal to me,
to travel to that same harbour,
roughly 70 years later
with my own children.

It made my heart smile,
as I stood there gazing up at the very lighthouse
that he would have gazed upon
when he was so young.

Back long LONG before he could possibly know
that his granddaughter would be standing in this same place
holding two of his great-granddaughters.

It makes me stop and wonder if my own grandchildren
might read this blog some day
and feel inclined to travel to see that same lighthouse
 with my very own great-grandchildren.

Life holds so many unknowns,
and it's amazing.

My grandfather told me about fishing of the shores of Souris.
About how he would sometimes spend the night at sea
if the conditions were favorable.
If not, and they were forced to stay on land,
they would help out on the local farms picking potatoes.

I love hearing these stories!

My next plan is to bring my father to that harbour
when he visits next.

And the ULTIMATE plan
is to convince my grandfather to visit me here someday,
so that I can bring HIM back to that lighthouse
and then we can gaze upon it together!

My little family in front of the lighthouse.
The lighthouse in Souris harbour.
While I was having a moment to gaze at the lighthouse
and reflect upon all that my grandfather has seen and accomplished
over the years,
my girls spied a sandbox and made a run for it.
The Souris harbour that Pop's boat would have docked.
More of Souris' shores.
Here's a photo that I found online of what Souris Harbour
would have looked like many years ago.
Just as beautiful as it is now!
